Minimally, the student should have some programming knowledge and experience. Foundational courses in programming, data structures and machine organization as well as college mathematics at the level of calculus or above are recommended. Admitted students are expected to be prepared to take upper level and graduate classes at the time they enter they program. The department does not distinguish between traditional MS and PhD students in determining admissions to the program or in offering aid packages.


It is possible to start as an MS student and switch to the PHD track if the milestones are met. Students in the PhD track are encouraged to obtain an MS along the way, though they are not required to do so.
